We can all agree that the 80's were a time when the best family dramas were taped. Let us mention Dynasty, Dallas, Knots Landing, Santa Barbara, Falcon Crest and many other series.
The Dynasty fans were happy to watch, at the same time, Dynasty II - The Colbys, that featured some Dynasty characters. This is why the Dynasty fans are so critical in reference to Dynasty's spin off. One thing is for sure, despite the differences in taste, The Colbys are an interesting show that gathered astonishing crew of actors, led by Charlton Heston, Barbara Stanwyck, Stephanie Beacham, Katharine Ross, Ricardo Montalban, the legends of both big screen and TV. Intrigue and glamour of the Colbys was as interesting as most soaps of that time.
The Colbys are a spin off of the Dynasty. It was on from 1985-1986, had two seasons and 49 episodes. Dynasty presented the Colby characters at a ball in Denver where The Colbys came to celebrate the Denver Carrington and Colby Enterprises business project - oil pipeline construction inauguration. Than the story moves to L. A. along with Jeff Colby who goes there to find his lost wife Fallon Carrington Colby, who has amnesia and is married to his cousin Miles.
Two love triangles are the center of attention. First triangle consists of the head of the family, Jason Colby, his wife Sable and her sister, Jeff's mother, Francesca. We already mentioned the second triangle, Colby juniors, Jeff and Miles both in love with Fallon. The friendly ghost of the family is Jason's strong and vital sister Connie and the evil ghost of the Colby's past is Zack Powers. The biggest threat to the family in the end will come from their own flash and blood, Jason's brother Philip who was found dead in Vietnam and who was thought to be Jeff's father.
The Colbys ended with a cliffhanger that wasn't resolved but the creators left space for the characters to pass on to the Dynasty which was done in a couple of occasions. It is worth mentioning that the ending of The Colbys series, to opinions of many TV reviewers, is one of the most controversial cliffhangers on TV, melting the soap and SF genre together.
Aaron Spelling was aware that The Colbys would never reach the popularity of the Dynasty, since it would always seem to be a copy of the original, but he kept claiming that, in his rich career of producer and creator of many projects, he gathered one of the best and the strongest crews in a TV show, preceded by the legendary Charlton Heston, Barbara St anwyck, Ricardo Mo nt alban, Katharine Ross, Stephanie Beacham and others.
The Colbys were broadcast in far less countries than Dynasty which is the reason why these pages are of such value not only to the fans of the show but to those who never saw it to find out about the story and the characters. This portion of the site gives you general information about the show while all other information on The Colbys and its connection to the Dynasty can be found on other Ultimate Dynasty pages. We hope the section of the site dedicated to The Colbys brings you a pleasure.
